Questions locals ask
Is there anywhere my dog can go on the beach in summer?
A few towns have summer windows in their official rules: Provincetown town beaches allow dogs off-leash under voice and sight control 6–9 am and 6–9 pm (Memorial Day – Nov 1); Chatham's Jackknife Harbor Beach allows dogs before 9:00 am and after 6:00 pm; Eastham's beach at Dyer Prince Rd allows leashed dogs before 9 AM and after 4 PM. See Where can my dog go this summer?
Where is the 24/7 emergency vet on Cape Cod?
Per its own website, Cape Cod Veterinary Specialists – Buzzards Bay (11 Bourne Bridge Approach, Buzzards Bay, 508-759-5125) is open 24/7 for emergencies. Call ahead. See Vets & Emergency Vets.
Are there fenced, off-leash dog parks?
Yes: Barnstable Dog Park (1431 Phinney's Lane, free, dawn to dusk), Falmouth Dog Park (257 Brick Kiln Road, free, dawn to dusk year-round) and Pilgrim Bark Park in Provincetown (Rt 6 at Shank Painter Road, gated, with a small-dog section). See Dog Parks & Trails.
Can I bring my dog to the Cape Cod National Seashore?
Yes, on a 6-ft leash where allowed — not on lifeguard-protected beaches in summer (you may pass through on leash) or in posted shorebird areas. Leashed pets are allowed year-round on Doane Trail (Eastham), Pilgrim Spring Trail (Truro), all fire roads and the Head of the Meadow bike trail, per the National Park Service. See Beach rules.
When do town beaches open to dogs again after summer?
It depends on the town: verified end dates range from Labor Day (e.g., Yarmouth, Dennis, Harwich, Truro) to September 15 (e.g., Barnstable, Chatham, Sandwich), October 1 (Falmouth) and October 15 (Bourne). See Off-season dog beach openings.
Can I leave my dog in the car at a Falmouth beach parking lot in summer?
No. Falmouth's beach regulations bar animals from the beach and beach parking lots May 1 – October 1, including pets left in parked vehicles. See the Falmouth page.
Is there a dog trainer on the Lower Cape?
Tail Waggin' Dog Training (Brewster-based) runs group classes at Cape Cod Veterinary Specialists in South Dennis and nosework at Lower Cape TV in Orleans, and Rule of Two Canine Consultants trains in Eastham, Wellfleet, Truro and Provincetown. See Obedience Trainers.
Who can walk my dog on the Upper Cape while I'm at the beach?
Listed options include The Happy Pack (Falmouth, Mashpee, Sandwich and Bourne) and Upper Cape Pet (Falmouth, Mashpee, Sandwich, Bourne and Cotuit). See Dog Walkers & Pet Sitters.
